In the tradition of Rankin and McBride, a police procedural from the heart of Scotland.

ONE MAN WILL STOP AT NOTHING TO FIND THE HUMAN SOUL

Detective Inspector Alex Menzies starts her first day in a new job with a call to the scene of a terrible murder. The body of a young man has been left on a funeral pyre with a hole in the middle of his forehead. The investigation into the bizarre murder is lead by Alex’s new boss Detective Superintendent Tom Russell.
A vicious, bigoted racist is the first suspect but within days the city is shocked by the discovery of another mutilated and burned body. The killer’s signature is a small cross placed in the victim’s hand and the terrifying possibility of the city’s first serial killer in over forty years gives the police investigators a challenge that will tax all their skills and combined experience.
New victims are found and with each death the case becomes more puzzling and the police more desperate. As fear grips Glasgow, the investigative team must find the Soulseeker before he kills again in his search for the truth about the human soul.

I love this author's "Reluctant Detective" series so I thought I would try this one. This is very different. This is written more like a Masterpiece Theater piece. The story describes plain old conscientious police work and how a British murder investigation is handled. It takes you to the murder scene, the autopsy, the daily research assignments, the teamwork involved. In this first novel you do not get to know the characters that well and there is little relationship nuance. It is the reason I only gave 4 stars. I like more insight into the characters.
As a side note, this story uses the F word a lot. I assume that this may be the way people talk in certain parts of the world. I have a wide circle of friends and am busy in my community and I rarely ever hear this used. It didn't detract too much from the story, but I don't think it added anything either. Just saying. Sometimes colloquialism can be carried too far. Also, I am not interested in the thoughts and feelings of the murderer and the delight they get from committing their deed. I like solving the mystery. This story had the murderer's thoughts in italics and I skipped over it and enjoyed the mystery.
The author has a great vocabulary and this is well written.

Good dialogue and well described cast of characters. A true page turner, though using a Fire. Will get author's others.
Even I could write a book if the f word was every other word. I lost the whole idea of the book with the course language.
Good story good read held interest
I really enjoyed the book. It is one of those that just when you think you have solved the whodunit; you find out No you didn't.
Keeps you guessing right up to the end.
First, let me say that I read 3-5 mysteries a week. So I have a lot of comparisons. Reading this was like reading a screen play. The author includes the killer's thought and also the procedural investigation by the police. Great characters. I am on to my next in the series.
I am a Sinclair Macleod fan and have really enjoyed the Craig Campbell stories.
This one is new with Alex Menzies and her police adventures. I found the beginning a bit "heavy going" especially the Post mortem description. But the story progressed into a real thriller, the individual members of the team were shown in very human terms and the killers revelation a big surprise.
